The bachelor program in clinical medicine in Shenzhen University (SZU) was approved by the Ministry of Education and the SZU Medical School was established in December 2008, which is the very first medical school in Shenzhen. Currently, Professor Baoguo Jiang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is Dean of the SZU Medical School. The scientific and medical excellence nationalwide in Medical School includes genome medicine, immunity, cancer research, ageing & metabolism, therapeutic lead compound discovery, AI imaging, medical equipment development, orthopedics, neurosurgery, burn surgery, and pain management.

SZU Medical School consists of nine schools (School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Biomedical Engineering, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry, School of Public Health, and three Clinical Medical Colleges), School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Planned), General Practice Department, Carson Cancer Center, and Medical Humanistic Center. Medical School has 7 university hospitals and affiliated hospitals, and 18 teaching hospitals. In 2021, all affiliated hospitals have 6,572 open beds.

There are six Bachelor Programs: clinical medicine, biomedical engineering, pharmacy, nursing, stomatology, and preventive medicine. There are two PhD Programs in Biomedical Engineering and Biology, two Master Programs in Biomedical Engineering and Basic Medical Sciences, and 4 professional Master Programs in Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, and Public Health. SZU Medical School has an enrollment of 3,786 full-time students, which include 2,258 undergraduates, 1,433 graduates, 75 Ph.D. students, and 20 international students. 

SZU Medical School has a total of 611 faculty members, including 264 full-time teaching and research staff including 21 Distinguished Professor, 32 professors, 47 associate professors, 2 senior lecturers, 99 assistant professors/lecturers, and 180 postdoctoral researchers. Most of the full-time teaching and research staff have overseas study or working experience, 96.2% of them hold doctoral degrees, and 77.65% are below 45 years old. The excellent faculty members includes 8 domestic and foreign academicians, 1 Nobel Laureate, 1 chief scientist of the Innovation Program Project of NSFC, 3 chief scientists of major projects/major instrument development projects of the NSFC, 6 winners of the NSFC "Outstanding Youth Fund", chairs and chairs elected of 3 branches of the Chinese Medical Association/Chinese Anti-Cancer Association Branch, 7 winners of the "Excellent Youth Fund", 5 persons are chief scientists of key R&D programs and major special projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology. There are 2 winners of the "He Liang He Li Award", 2 selected for the National Major Talent Project and 10 selected for the Youth Talent Project.

SZU Medical School has three national research platforms, one national international scientific and technological cooperation base, six key research platforms in Guangdong Province, one Nobel Prize laboratory, and 15 Shenzhen municipal research platforms.

SZU Medical School has been awarded 1,706 funded research projects over?1.384 billion RMB, including 755 NSFC Grants. Our faculty has published a total of 4,732 papers in SCI indexed journals during 2016-2022, 483 of which are high-quality publications that are PNAS equivalent or above, 79 of which are in Nature, Science, Cell and their sub-journals. Clinical medicine is within top 3‰ ESI and biology & biochemistry is within top 5‰ ESI. Basic medicine ranked top 11% and biomedical engineering ranked top 20% among best majors ranking in China.

SZU Medical School actively promotes internationalization in  cooperation and exchanges, and has established collaboration and partnerships with high-profile medical schools and research institutions in USA, UK, Germany,Australia, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Belgium, Kazakhstan and other countries.
