School of Biomedical Engineering

The School of Biomedical Engineering (BME) began in 2006 as Department of Biomedical Engineering under the School of Information Engineering. Enrollment of graduate students in biomedical engineering started in 2007. Enrollment of undergraduate students in 2008. In 2009, the department merged into the School of Medicine, and in 2015 became part of the SZU HSC. There are four departments in school of BME: Medical Electronics, Medical Informatics Engineering, Medical Laboratory Technology, Molecular Imaging.

The School is led by Professor Siping Chen, and rapidly developed since its founding. In 2006, the School received approval for first-class the Master degree discipline; accredited MSc programs (2009) in Biomedical Engineering. In 2017, the School received approval for first-class the doctoral degree discipline. In 2012, Biomedical Engineering was identified as a key academic discipline in the Guangdong Province.  and in the fourth round of program evaluation in 2016, it was qualified class B, ranking 15th in China (tied), and 2nd in Guangdong Province (tied). The School occupies over 8,845 square meters of laboratory space, and research laboratories are equipped with instruments valued at over 79.6 million RMB. There are research centers founded in School of BME at different levels: 2 National research centers, 3 provincial research centers, 1 provincial teaching center. Faculty in School of BME includes 66 full-time teaching faculty, 75% with overseas background. 1 in Thousand Elite Plan, 6 in Thousand Youth, 1 in National Outstanding Youth, 1 chief scientists in 973 Project, 2 Special Allowance Expert of the State Council. Professor Barry J. Marshall, Nobel laureate, Professor David A. Weitz, academician of the three academies of the United States and other top international scholars were appointed as visiting professors. In the past five years, the school has carried out 99 National research projects, including 973 Plan, NSFC Key Projects, National Key Research Instrument Projects etc., 102 provincial research projects, 258 municipal projects, with a total funding of 197million RMB, and won 5 provincial awards.

The School focuses on training a team of talents with high-level interdisciplinary background, and constructs a set of international research operation mechanism with first-class standard. It has formed its own research characteristics in the fields of medical ultrasound imaging and intelligent analysis, brain language function area, in vitro diagnostic equipment, multi-functional nano probes, allergic diseases and other fields. The research results are published in Nature Communications,PNAS,IEEE Trans,Chemical Reviews,Advanced Materials and other top journals. The School is working on the collaborative innovation and construction of science, engineering and medicine to develop local industrial economy, and develops independent and innovative cutting edge medical equipment, such as high-performance color ultrasound, full-automatic high-throughput in vitro diagnostic instruments. It has achieved industrial manufacture in enterprises, with the industrial benefit of billions RMB. Ideological and political education has always been run through the whole process of postgraduate training, promoting the coordinated development of professional education. By strengthening the cooperation between school and enterprise, establishing internship and employment, it can promote graduate employment. In the past five years, the employment rate of postgraduates has been over 90%, with an average of 94%. Among them, some are working in domestic and international leading medical equipment enterprises, some are studying for doctoral degree in famous universities. The comprehensive quality of graduates is widely praised by the society.

 

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratories of Biomedical Measurement and Ultrasound imaging

Guangdong Province Key Laboratory of Biomedical Measurement and Ultrasound Imaging is based upon the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering. In 2011, it was formally approved by the Science and Technology Department of Guangdong Province. It is mainly engaged in bio-information detection research methods, ultrasound imaging methods and other applications based key technology and their applications. The laboratory is supported by the Shenzhen University.

Mission and Vision

Carrying on applied basic research in ultrasound imaging and bioinformatics detection, we intend to break through technology bottlenecks in the above directions that affect medical devices, provide key technologies and methods for the associated medical device industries, especially high-end technology and products in the direction of the above related applications, provide support and services for China's medical equipment industry to develop core technical personnel, enhance core competitiveness, make the lab to become influential on the basis of international research base, become professional staff of medical equipment output and technical support center.

Target

Carrying out researches for key scientific issues and technical problems in medical ultrasound imaging and bioinformatics detection with the foundation basis and supporting applications, relying on the advantages of Guangdong Province in the medical device industry, we organize research team to maximize engineering. Among them, medical ultrasound imaging technology, ultrasound therapy, in vitro diagnostic technology, life care information technology, bio-information detection technology and so on will reach the leading domestic level with some reaching the international leading level. We also aim to provide key module technologies and methods for China medical industry related products and develop high-end technical personnel.

Laboratory operates under the guidance of the Director of Academic Committee of responsibility. The laboratory sets up a director chaired by Professor Tianfu Wang, and a Deputy Director, chaired by Professor Minhua Lu, together with Academic Committee headed by Professor Wang Yingjun.

 

School of BME Faculty Resources

1. Department of Medical Electronics

The Department of medical electronics focus on the research and development of medical electronic system, and is committed to the industrialization of scientific and technological achievements. With the leadership of Professor Chen Siping, the department has established a top class academic innovation team, gathered a group of young scientists and experts from all over the world in medical ultrasonic engineering, information signal processing, computer science, physics and other related fields.

At present, with the efforts of team, the research center has been established well, including national and local joint Engineering Laboratory of medical ultrasound key technology, Guangdong biomedical information testing and ultrasound imaging Key Laboratory, and Guangdong medical electronic instrument transformation engineering technology research center. The department has presided over and completed over ten national, provincial and ministerial research projects, including major scientific research instruments projects funded by NSFC and key projects funded by NSFC. With support of governments, tens of millions grants has been invested to purchase the most advanced instruments and equipment, and a first-class international medical electronic research center has been established.

2. Department of Medical Informatics Engineering

Medical informatics engineering is an interdisciplinary cutting-edge field that integrates information technology, artificial intelligence, data science, medical imaging, neuroscience and other related filed. Using advanced data analysis and artificial intelligence algorithm, with the help of high-performance computing platform and medical imaging technology, the Department has made in-depth and comprehensive analysis of medical images and clinical data such as ultrasound images, neural images, pathological images, etc., carrying out systematic research in the early screening, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases (such as brain diseases and tumors), and accumulated data in clinical practice. At present, the Department has 16 full-time staffs, including 5 professors, 5 associate professors / associate researchers, 6 lecturers / assistant professors. Among them 3 experts of the National Youth thousand talents project, 13 Shenzhen outstanding scholars with overseas background, 2 outstanding scholars in Shenzhen University, and 1 SZU excellent youth. In addition, academician Gu Jianjun's workstation, Shenzhen peacock team of overseas talents "precision medical database" and interdisciplinary innovation team of Shenzhen University "early accurate diagnosis of fetal development and abnormality based on image genomics" were carried out. The department has completed over 60 national, provincial and ministerial research projects with total grants of 100 million RMB. They have published more than 100 SCI papers in internationally renowned journals including PNAS, Science Advances, IEEE Trans Cybernetics, IEEE Trans Medical Imaging, Medical Image Analysis, Human Brain Mapping, etc.

3. Department of Medical Laboratory Technology

The Department of Medical Laboratory Technology is the driest and the only team for systematic teaching, research and industrialization of in vitro diagnosis in the biomedical engineering among domestic universities. The department now has 7 research faculty members, including 1 national leading talent in Shenzhen and 3 talents with overseas background. The visiting professor includes Nobel laureate Professor Barry J. Marshall, Professor David A. Weitz, academician of the third Academy of American, Professor Xiping Xu, expert of the national "thousand talents plan", Dr. Biwang Jiang, etc., 5 postdoctoral and over 40 graduate students and research assistants. The team has undertaken more than 30 projects, including major instrument projects of NSFC, NSFC research projects of Guangdong Province, major industrial public relations projects of Shenzhen, with funding of nearly 30 million RMB. They have published more than 100 SCI papers in internationally renowned journals including Nature Communications, PNAS, Advanced Materials, IEEE Transactions, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, etc. By the efforts and development in recent years, a common technical service research center for in vitro diagnostic instruments in Shenzhen has been established, which is at the leading level all over the country in the field of full-automatic high-throughput in vitro diagnostic instruments, and the industrial transformation benefit has reached billion RMB. In 2018, the Department of medical laboratory technology recruited academician He Tian from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, integrated relevant scientific research forces of the school of Biomedical Engineering, established academician workstation, and carried out basic and application research in new methods and technologies of in vitro diagnosis, committed to solving major clinical needs and better serving local economy and society.

4. Department of Molecular Imaging

The research field of molecular imaging department was first developed in 2015, and the Department of molecular imaging was officially established in 2017. It is mainly engaged in the molecular imaging and nanomedicine, and is committed to the clinical translation and application of molecular imaging probes and nanodrugs. At present, the department has 26 full-time staffs, including 3 distinguished professors, 1 professor, 2 associate researchers, 1 lecturer, 1 assistant professor, 17 postdoctoral scholars, 1 research assistant. Among them 1 "highly cited scientist" of Kerui Wei'an, 3 experts in national youth thousand talents project, 7 Shenzhen talents with oversea background, 1 SZU leading scholar, and 1 SZU youth scholar. The department has completed over 30 national, provincial and municipal research projects with a total funding of more than 40 million RMB, including 15 national projects. Specifically, it includes 2 programs of the youth thousand talents program of the Central Organization Department, 13 programs of the NSFC (including 3 general projects, 9 youth projects, and 1 emergency management project), 1 Huo Yingdong education fund, 1 National Key Laboratory Open Fund, 1 major basic research and cultivation of Guangdong Natural Science Fund, and 10 Shenzhen research projects , 8 funded by China Postdoctoral fund and 2 new Postdoc projects.
