On May 24th 2024, we were delighted to host Prof. Hou Yanglong, Chair Professor and Dean of the School of Materials Science at Sun Yat-sen University, as our distinguished guest speaker for the 109th session of the Shenzhen University Medicine Forum. Prof. Hou delivered an academic report titled "Chemical Construction of Magnetic Nanoprobes and Their Exploration in Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment" at Shaheyuan in the Lihu Campus, upon invitation by Prof. Huang Peng from the School of Biomedical Engineering at the Medical Department of Shenzhen University. The forum, presided over by Prof. Huang Peng, attracted a large audience comprising faculty and students.

In this lecture, we learned that magnetic nanostructures, due to their unique physical and chemical properties, hold significant value in applications across fields such as information storage, biomedicine, and nanocatalysis. Prof. Hou specifically presented data regarding the applications of two-dimensional magnetic nanomaterials and various magnetic nanoprobe types (such as iron carbide and iron sulfide) in multi-modal imaging techniques for tumors, including magnetic resonance imaging and photoacoustic imaging, as well as in treatments such as photothermal therapy, magnetic hyperthermia therapy, chemodynamic therapy, and immunotherapy. Prof. Hou also discussed the challenges faced in the research of monodisperse magnetic nanomaterials. He outlined the research strategies employed by his group and summarized the key issues related to the metabolic mechanisms and clinical translation of magnetic nanostructures. Following his lecture, Prof. Hou actively engaged with the attendees, addressing a range of questions regarding the application of magnetic nanoprobes in tumor diagnosis and treatment. His lecture certainly improved the understanding of multifunctional magnetic nanoprobes among the faculty and students of the Medical Department.
